Is It Time for a Mid-Year Review of Your Interiorscape Business?

Have you ever stopped to look at your weekly calendar and wondered, “How did all these things become my routine?” It’s as if meetings, tasks, responsibilities, and obligations appeared over time without much thought about where they came from or why they’re there. Of course, they’re usually important, but rarely are they the most important things.

Now that we’re halfway through the year, I think it’s time for a mid-year review.

What Is a Mid-Year Review?

When I say mid-year review, I mean taking time to reevaluate all activities that have become routine. I do this to determine what is actually important moving forward. I like to pretend that today is the first day in my role. Everything is negotiable in terms of when, how, and who completes the tasks at hand. This is especially helpful when managing the many responsibilities that come with running and growing an interiorscape business.

What Should You Review?

A mid-year review doesn’t have to be complicated. Start by looking at your goals, calendar, recurring meetings, and key responsibilities. Ask yourself whether the activities taking up most of your time are still aligned with what matters most.

You may find that certain meetings, processes, or commitments no longer deserve the attention they once did. You may also identify opportunities to streamline operations, develop team members, or focus more energy on the areas that will have the greatest impact during the second half of the year.

Why Is a Mid-Year Review Beneficial?

One of the biggest benefits of a mid-year review is the opportunity to reassess your goals and priorities. Client needs evolve, new opportunities emerge, teams grow, and priorities shift. In fact, some of the goals we set earlier in the year may no longer be the goals that will have the greatest impact moving forward. Why continue pursuing something simply because it made sense six months ago?

Good routines contribute to career success, but they also help create a healthier balance between work and life. The idea is to build a weekly calendar around activities that support both your interiorscape business goals and your personal priorities.

Trying to get everything done in a limited amount of time becomes extremely stressful. Between client needs, team responsibilities, operational challenges, and everything else that comes with running an interiorscape business, it’s easy to fall into routines that no longer serve us well. Great habits of sleep, exercise, nutrition, hydration, and socialization may have slipped for long enough that they are no longer habits. A mid-year review can help restore the balance that allows us to feel and perform at our best.

Build a Stronger Team

One way to create balance when we already have too much on our plates is to delegate more responsibility. This isn’t easy, but it is simple. Oftentimes, we don’t delegate because we fear others won’t perform tasks the way we would, or because we’ve convinced ourselves that no one else can do them as well. But if you’ve hired well and committed to a learning culture within your interiorscape business, all that’s required to change the game is a little more trust in your teammates.

I decided it was time to really trust my excellent colleagues and assign additional tasks to them, and they’ve done phenomenal work. In fact, they are completing tasks faster than I can right now, with more care than I can give at the moment. My only regret is not having more trust in them sooner because I already feel the burden being lifted from my shoulders.

Invest in Team Development

If delegation feels difficult, you may need to focus on developing the skills of your interiorscape team.
