These tiny pests can cause significant damage to many plant species. Among the most destructive is the western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis.

Fortunately, western flower thrips are more commonly associated with greenhouse and ornamental production than interior landscapes. The real threat to interior plants is the chilli thrips, Scirtothrips dorsalis. This species is often misidentified because its damage can resemble that caused by broad mites. It also feeds on a variety of tropical foliage plants. Understanding why these insects are so destructive and how to identify them is crucial for effective control.

Why Are Thrips So Destructive?

Thrips often feed on new growth emerging from the growing tips. An infestation can stunt plant development and damage buds, leading to visible distortion and other aesthetic damage. Thrips can also transmit plant viruses; however, most of these viruses are confined to vegetable and flower crops and don’t significantly impact plants typically used in interior landscapes.

How to Identify Thrips

If you suspect a thrips infestation, bring a hand lens with you. Chilli thrips are incredibly small and pale, measuring about 0.5–1.2 mm in length, while western flower thrips are a bit larger and can range from pale yellow to dark brown. Depending on the species, thrips can vary quite a bit in color.

You can also identify chilli thrips by their feeding damage. They often attack tender new growth, causing leaves to curl or distort, and damaged foliage may develop a silvery, brown, or black appearance.

The Life Cycle of Thrips

Chilli thrips can complete their life cycle in about 2–3 weeks, depending on temperature and the host plant. Females cut into plant tissue and insert their eggs, which hatch into larvae that feed on the plant. As they mature, the larvae stop feeding and move into prepupal and pupal stages.

These later stages are usually found in protected areas on or around the plant, such as curled leaves, leaf litter, or blooms. Because chilli thrips do not rely on the soil for pupation in the same way western flower thrips do, control efforts are generally focused on the plant itself.

Signs of a Thrips Infestation

If you suspect thrips, here are a few ways to check:

Use a hand lens or magnifying glass: Look closely at new growth, buds, and the undersides of leaves for tiny thrips, dark specks of frass, or feeding damage such as leaf stippling, silvery scarring, curling, or distortion.

Tap leaves over a sheet of white paper: Hold the paper beneath the foliage while you tap or shake the plant gently. If thrips are present, they may fall onto the surface, where they’re easier to see.

Place blue or yellow sticky cards near the plants: Adult thrips are attracted to these colors, so sticky cards can help confirm their presence and monitor activity over time. Check the cards regularly to see whether populations are increasing or declining.

How to Control Thrips on Indoor Plants

How will you get rid of these irritating insects? As with other pests, one option is plant removal. Another effective method is biological control, and a predatory mite called Amblyseius swirskii can be especially useful. This tiny, cream-colored mite feeds on immature thrips but not the eggs and has been used successfully on tropical foliage plants in interior landscapes.

Treatment with pesticides in interior settings can be challenging, which is why biological control is so appealing. Beneficial nematodes are also commonly discussed for thrips control, although their effectiveness depends on the thrips species and where it pupates.

Preventing Thrips Infestations

Always check plants on arrival. Use blue or yellow sticky cards in the holding area to help detect thrips before plants are moved into the interior landscape. Regularly inspect plants, especially new growth, for signs of activity, and isolate any infested plants immediately to help prevent spread. Consistent monitoring and early detection can reduce the chances of a larger infestation and allow for quicker, more effective control.

Battling other common indoor plant pests?
